DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

In late 2015, I arranged a four-day exchange program between Chinese International School and SALEM-Immanuel Lutheran College (ILC) in Hong Kong. The exchange was filmed by a team of students from both schools and developed into a 40-minute documentary titled, “One Education, Two Systems”.

The aim of the project is to develop mutual understanding and appreciation between students at international schools and traditional local schools in Hong Kong and help bridge the divide in the education system. At the same time, the documentary also seeks to spark discussion on education-related topics, various disparities and other differences between the two systems (teaching styles, mental health, learning attitude, general atmosphere and competitiveness).

To promote public awareness of these issues and encourage public discussion, I have worked with local media HK01 to publish an article on the film. I am also currently working with other media outlets to continue promotion of the documentary. The film has been entered into local and international film festivals and we are currently trying to partner with local cinemas for public screenings in 2017. As a result of these efforts, I have been sharing my views with the Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Section, Education Bureau, HKSAR, about how more collaborative programs and partnership initiatives between local and international schools can be promoted. At the same time, the NET Section is screening the documentary in a territory-wide cluster meeting in early April. Additional screenings from mid-April onwards will include time for reflection, discussion and feedback from teachers and students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Regional NET Coordinating Team (RNCT) of the NET Section, who have long been supporting us in promoting this project, which has successfully developed from the experiences we had with our involvement in the NET Section’s Clipit competition, a student-created film competition. I am hopeful that this project is successful in encouraging more public discussion and policy reforms to address these issues.
